Steven Woloshen created "Playtime" in 2010 as part of The Toronto Animated Image Society's funded project to bring the Group 11 Painters alive with animation. His film was an homage to the life and art of Jock MacDonald. This film was created with paint and decayed frames of Hollywood trailers glued directly onto the surface of 35 mm film strips.
Steven Woloshen’s traditional animation without a camera is remarkable for its unusual variety of bright colours. Thanks to fluid metamorphoses of characteristic gaming symbols and elements, we delve into gambling intoxication. The director was motivated and inspired by a memory of his father who “loved to play games.”
As the title of this somewhat mysterious film suggests, the director uses old photographs. Scenes from everyday life, empty corridors, architecture, fragments of bodies and memories. The order of the photographs, their composition and fleeting artistic inputs reveal new worlds and destinies.
