The Island of the Dead

This disturbing film again utilises many artistic approaches and animation techniques. It also combines several influences. Inspired by Kafka’s story In the Penal Colony, a famous painting by Arnold Böcklin and drawing a parallel to Soviet Russia, the film takes us to a strange place where a soldier is about to be punished for insubordination. The punishment will be carried out by a machine which will engrave the committed crime (as a text) on the man’s back so that he feels it ‘on his own skin’.
